The artifact I have chosen is a summary of my first four months in a management position. I created it during this semester, 20EW2, which runs from November through December of 2020. I created it to show how I have worked alongside my current coworkers the last 4 years and how I have led them the past 4 months.
Requirements and Knowledge
Because this is a summary of my, at the time, recent work experience, the only requirements and knowledge needed were skills I already possessed. At least on the technical side. One set of skills I was lacking that could have made this time be more productive would be more experience managing people.
Key Takeaways
In the summary, I show how I while working side by side with my coworkers, I encouraged them to grow and learn more to be better employees. I also show how, as their manager now, I have continued to encourage their growth.
I believe in leading by example and I have never asked them to do something I was incapable of doing or was not willing to learn. My coworkers know I understand the ins and outs of their jobs because we had the same job for four years. There may be some resentment because they have been at the company for longer than I have but they also know I stand by them and want them to grow.
Challenges
I would not say I learned anything when creating this summary, however, I will say that I realized how much I have accomplished in just a brief period. This is only my second time being in an official position of management, but it is the first time I feel like the people I work with look up to me as a manager and look to me for direction.
Creating this document helped me by forcing me to examine my accomplishments and leadership style. These skills are necessary to grow in a business to justify asking for raises and promotions and offering them to subordinates.
